My Birth Story of Samuel Emryck Eshenbaugh
I’m not quite sure when my labor began exactly. It was so different than my last one. My last labor was in the hospital & I was induced. It was more like having a procedure done, not birthing. Anyway this is my story.

I went to Carolina Waterbirth on May 9th, 2011 for my 41 week check up. Not much was happening. So, they told me that I could try this herbal stimulator called “Start Up”, since my hubby was overly anxious for me to have our newest son. I wasn’t so into trying it, but my hubby bought it & we went home.

I was feeling a little out of sorts that night but nothing that would nor could interrupt my sleeping. I awoke at the usual time, fed my 2 yr old son breakfast, while my husband took my 13 yr old son, Riley to school & I took my first dose of the herbal stimulator. Took my shower & decided that we were going to go to the mall. My hubby, David & my 2 year old son, Aidan accompanied me. I figured I was going to try to walk this baby out! And that’s exactly what I tried to do.

As we were walking I started having a few contractions, however, they were quite sporadic. I just ignored them & kept walking. As we approached the indoor kiddy play area of the Haywood Mall, I felt this trickle. I wondered if I had just peed on myself. Feeling a bit embarrassed, I told my hubby I had to go to the restroom. Turns out that it was just my water breaking. It was now about two o’clock in the afternoon. We walked around for a little bit more then we left to head on home.

The contractions were beginning to become more consistent. We ate some dinner & played with our other sons. Around 9 pm, my husband recommended that we call my sister to come over so that she could watch the boys. I told him that it sounded great. I wanted to go over a few things with her, so the timing was perfect. When she arrived, I went over a few things & asked my hubby to run me a bath. I soaked in the tub for a little bit, which helped greatly with my contractions.

My contractions were getting closer & closer together & I asked David to call Sandy, my midwife. Then, as he was dialing her number, I felt a lot of pressure & the urge to push . I looked at my husband and told him it was time for us to go. He briefly talked to Sandy & she told us that she was going to head on into the center & get things going for us. We headed downstairs & I told my sister that we were leaving. She panicked and shrieked,” I though you had already left! You better go & go now! I don’t want to deliver that baby here! Go, go, go!” And with that she shoved me out the door.

Things had picked up quite quickly by this point. I was waiting on David to unlock my mother’s car door, (my sister had driven it over & we were leaving her our car since we wanted her to have the car seat for our 2 yr old) when a hard contraction hit. So, here I was, down on all fours, doing pelvic rocks in the middle of my driveway. My hubby ran over with a pillow & moved me onto the pillow. Lord only knows what my neighbors thought!! But, I didn’t care…I was working through it & did what I needed to. Somehow, amidst all the hyped up energy my hubby & I both had, we just couldn’t figure out how to unlock my mother’s car. After a moment or two, we finally figured out how to get into my mother’s vehicle. Note to anyone planning on using someone else’s vehicle on the “big day” ….get acquainted with the vehicle beforehand!

So, my husband hit the highway. I was working though the contractions when I suddenly felt this urge to push….again! I may have mentioned that to my husband because, all of a sudden he started driving even faster than he was already! I didn’t know what to focus on more, my labor or my hubby’s erratic driving!

We arrived at Carolina Waterbirth at 10:35 pm. Sandy was there, waiting on us. She had the room & tub prepared already. I quickly hopped into the nice, warm, soothing tub. The lights in the room were down really low and I felt so comfortable. It’s amazing what a difference the atmosphere makes when your in labor! The minute I got into the birthing tub, the pain seem to have lessened. I felt great!

Jody, our doula had arrived and started helping me right away. She was placing nice, cool compresses on my forehead. It felt so good! I was having quite a bit of back pain & Jody didn’t hesitate to start rubbing my back for me. She was so wonderful! My hubby had changed into his ‘birthing‘ clothes and was getting into the tub with me.

I felt the urge to push again & told Sandy. She told me to do what I felt that I needed to do. I started pushing with the wonderful guidance of my own body. My husband & midwife were calmly coaching me. After a few more pushes, and at 11:22 pm, Samuel Emeryck Eshenbaugh was earthside and born into my midwife’s guiding, and my husbands loving hands.

Then my new baby boy was placed on my chest. He was so calm and peaceful. Unlike my other two sons, that was born screaming & crying, in a hospital. I attribute Samuel’s calmness and peacefulness to the calm birthing experience and the darker atmosphere. I was then moved to the big, beautiful bed where I was able to bond and nurse my beautiful son.

My husband and I enjoyed cuddling our new baby boy. Sandy came over after the baby was done nursing and documented Samuel’s birth weight, length, and all the other important information. I was released to go home at 2:30 am, a mere 3 hours after his birth, with our new bundle of joy!

The Birth of Samuel Ray
Image:

We found out we were pregnant with baby number 4 in April.  We had just moved from Louisville, KY to Greenville, SC.  We were temporarily living with my mother and father-in-law.  So needless to say, we were surprised! And excited. And not sure how in the world this was all gonna work out.  Children are a blessing from the Lord, and we were happy to add another blessing.

Summer came and went with swimming and getting to make new friends and finding a church to be members of.  Teaching the preschool VBS for a week. Fall started, along with  a dive into homeschooling our Kindergarten age daughter.  Hubby landed an entry level job, not his dream job, but definitely God’s provision for us.  We were able to save up money and move out to a rental house.

October was eventful in moving and getting into the groove with the local homeschool co-op volunteer schedule.  November came with the usual excitement and business building to Thanksgiving and Christmas decorating into early December.  Then the “False Labor” started.  Week in and week out, I’d hit an hour or so of light contractions.  The week after Christmas they were more serious and started to be uncomfortable. I would breath, pelvic rock, soak in the Epsom salts, and drink a little wine.  And they would stop.  After the first of January, I didn’t try to make them stop anymore!

I had been listening to the “peace at birth” hypnosis off and on, had rehearsed in my mind what to do if labor started and hubby wasn’t home.  Had even thought about what if I went too fast and delivered at home, and how to get the other three children upstairs or at least not in sight of birthing.  (My third born came in less than an hour and a half from start of labor pains)

January 4 comes along pretty steady and a good day. Decent rest and sleep the night before, so I was in a good mood.  Just ready to be done with pregnancy.  Hubby left for work around noon, disappointed I was not in labor. (He was hopeful that I would be so he could start a “week off”)  He called around 4 on his dinner break to check on me, but all I could report was one contraction that never repeated itself from the time he had left.  Around 5:30 all three of the kids were in tears about something.  I stopped my dinner prep and comforted and scolded and consoled.  I went back to fix their plates and was fine until 5:42.  That’s when it started. Real Labor.  7 minutes go by, and another contraction, 5:49, 5:56, etc.  Staying painful at the end.  I went into my “hypnosis” breathing with every pang.  The kids were eating and being usual, and I was zoning out into breathing through contractions.  About 5 go by and keep coming, and I decide to call in the backups.  First emergency call to Hubby, the control desk got to him quickly, and he called back, and came on home.  Text to grandma, call to grandpa---come help!  Told the kids I may tell them to go to their rooms, they were not in trouble, but mommy is going to have this baby tonight, so they may have to go play in their rooms while we wait for grandpa and Dad to get here.

Dad arrives, I am cleaning kitchen and kids are playing.  Everything normal except I have to lean over and hold the counter every 7 minutes.  Grandpa arrives.  He’ll be in charge till grandma can leave her duties as a nurse at Greenville Hospital.

I made the mistake to go upstairs to get a few things, and had 2 or 3 contractions real close.  I look at hubby in my pain, and say “we better go”.  Head out to the car.  The little one is in grandpa’s arms looking at me like “really, you are leaving me with him??”  Out we go, b/c labor is real!

Call mom, friend, and text sisters.  Then breathe with Hubby through contractions.

Head out of Greer down 385, clear traffic (it’s a little after 7p.m. now) all the way to Simpsonville/Carolina Water Birth.  Get in and back to the big room a little after 7:30.  The big tub is being filled. Sandy is gathering supplies.  Lights are dim, soft music on.  Hubby and I try to relax.  He massages my back for a bit.  Sitting is uncomfortable.  I stand and walk around.  Have something to drink, a little snack.  The assistant checks the baby’s heartbeat.  Things are fine.  Contractions start being every 5 min 3 or 4 times. Then drastically shift to every 2 min.  It’s about 8:20 or so by now.  Sandy comes to check the baby and dilation.  Say’s I’m 8 cm, very thin and the baby is station 3+.  I could go ahead and push him out in a couple of pushes.  So we head to the tub.  It was not quite 9p.m. The initial warmth relaxed me for maybe a minute. Then things started changing.  Contractions built up to the feeling to push.  I tried a few sitting/leaning back facing forward. Then thought I’d get better angle and use pushing muscles in the hands and knees position.  I turned and started pushing.  I felt the head come down.  It started burning like crazy. (there are other more extreme words I would like to use).  I tried to remember to breathe, and to have good guttural, womanly moans, but that all melted into tears and whimpering and pain.  Sandy kept encouraging me that “you’re about to meet him”  and Hubby was somewhere there.  He was quiet, but knowing he was there was good and comforting.  I pushed a few more times, pushing through the pain and burn. I kept asking “Is he out yet?”  Finally I felt a huge pain; the breaking of my water in a gush through the water of the tub; and heard the excitement behind me and knew he was almost all the way out.

[as a side note, at this point, Sandy said the little guy was just a fussing and turning his head back and forth almost as a thrash in the water]  I guess he wasn’t happy about having to come out!

I pushed a couple more times and got the rest of his body out.  I gathered my strength and turned around and met my little boy.  All scrunchy and wrinkled and red and absolutely adorable.  I sat in the water, shaky and shocked. Glad and excited.  I momentarily forgot the pain of childbirth as I held and cuddled him.  I had waited 9 months for this!  How precious and wonderful! (Samuel Ray was born at 9:13 p.m.)

We relaxed there till a little after midnight.  Headed home  and crashed in my bed.  The next morning was delightful.  I was surrounded by my children, my husband and my mother-in-love.  Pictures, smiles, excitement and wonder as they all met little Samuel.
